On June 12th, our students took their classroom learning into the streets of Maribor for a bridge exploration field trip. Walking through the historic Lent district, they observed, inspected, and analyzed the diverse engineering styles of the bridges spanning the Drava River. The excursion directly connected to their current Constructions unit, where students have been diving into different bridge types, their historical contexts, and the physics of structural forces. Back in the classroom, students put these real-world principles to the test by engineering their own miniature bridges out of wooden popsicle sticks, culminating in a thrilling weight-testing challenge to see just how much load their custom designs could withstand.
