UNESCO International School

ABOUT UNESCO International School

UNESCO launched ASPnet in 1953 with the aim to strengthen the student’s values through interaction with peers from different backgrounds and cultures. We are fostering values that will promote peace among people, preserve the planet and lead to a sustainable way of life. ASPnet Slovenia is a member of the UNESCO International Schools Network, which includes around 7,900 schools from a hundred and seventy-six countries.

Our school has joined the UNESCO Schools through its work in the field of theatre and its activities within the Youth Adopt a Monument project. In the past, our adopted site was the archaeological site of Poštela near Maribor, but recently we have adopted Pekrska gorca, a hill with a church on top that lies nearby our primary school.

In light of current global problems such as pollution, destruction of natural resources, wars, drug trafficking, human rights violations, underdevelopment, racism etc., the four main ASPnet priorities are:

  • Global problems and the role of the United Nations in solving them;
  • Education for sustainable development;
  • Peace and human rights;
  • Intercultural and heritage learning.

Our work at UNESCO is based on four fundamental principles, the Delors pillars, which are the foundation of every learning experience. These pillars are:

  • Learning to know.
  • Learning to know how to do.
  • Learning to know how to live together.
  • Learning to be.

ASPnet members work hand in hand with a culture of peace and non-violence, tolerance and cooperation, acceptance of differences, and a deep concern for the personal development of each individual and for the preservation of our natural and cultural heritage and our planet Earth. Therefore, we celebrate various UNESCO themes and international days.

Healthy School

ABOUT Healthy School

The Slovenian Healthy Schools Network responds to child and adolescent health issues and implements proven health promotion programmes in physical, mental, social and environmental health for students, teachers and parents.

The objectives are:

  • actively promoting a positive self-image for all pupils by showing that everyone can contribute to school life;
  • ensuring the all-round development of good interpersonal relationships among teachers, among pupils and teachers and pupils;
  • doing our best to make the social aims of the school clear to teachers, pupils and parents;
  • encouraging all pupils to take part in different activities by creating a variety of initiatives;
  • taking every opportunity to improve the school environment;
  • developing good links between school, home and community;
  • developing links between primary and secondary school;
  • actively supporting the health and well-being of our teachers;
  • teachers and school staff are role models for healthy behaviour;
  • taking into account the complementary role of school nutrition in the curriculum.
  • working with specialised services in the community that can advise and assist in the area of children’s and adolescents’ health;
  • building a strong link with the school health and dental services to actively support them in integrating health into the curriculum.

It is our policy that schools must integrate health promotion into all aspects of daily life, both in the curriculum and the hidden curriculum.

Symbiosis School

ABOUT Symbiosis School

Our school is a Symbiosis School. The core mission of Symbiosis remains cooperation and knowledge transfer between generations and the promotion of lifelong learning. The project aims to increase computer literacy and interest in e-learning among older people; it aims to help them to get in touch with computers and the internet (for the first time). Additionally, it promotes the values of volunteering and responsibility among young people and fosters a proactive attitude towards society and one’s future. Every experience counts.

Eno Tree

ABOUT Eno Tree

Our school is also involved in the international project ENO TREE PLANTING EVENT, so every year we plant a tree of peace. The Eno Day of Tree Planting started in 2004 in the Finnish village of Eno. Today, it involves thousands of schools from 150 countries worldwide planting a tree at noon on World Peace Day. The first trees are planted in Oceania, and then, as the Sun travels, in Asia, Europe, and Africa. Finally, the ring reaches the Americas and ends in Samoa. So far, some seven million trees have been planted around the world. For us, trees are the symbol of nature, peace and the richness of all life.

Raising digital competencies

ABOUT Raising digital competencies

The project addresses the quality and efficiency of education and training and promotes the development of innovative learning environments and flexible forms of learning. That will contribute to raising the digital skills of managers, teachers and pupils.

The project aims to develop more flexible forms of learning through the effective use of digital technologies in education and training, thus encouraging teachers to practice, plan and implement their professional development (digital strategies, digital competencies of managers, teachers and pupils).

Tutors

ABOUT Tutors

Tutoring can be an excellent way for older students to help younger students. When the youngest students are welcomed into the school community they are assigned a guardian. When older students tutor younger students, it helps them to build leadership skills, improve communication skills and boost self-esteem. Younger students often look up to older students and can benefit from their guidance and support.

Similarly, when Slovene students tutor international students in the afternoon programme, it can help to bridge the cultural gap, to promote international mindedness and multi languaging.  

Overall, tutoring is an excellent way for students to learn from each other, build relationships, and create a positive learning environment.

Coding 

ABOUT Coding

There are several benefits of learning coding for students. It helps to develop problem-solving skills, logical thinking and develops critical thinking skills. Coding can be a fun and engaging activity that encourages learning and exploration.
