The school fruit and vegetable scheme
The SCHOOL SCHEME is a new agricultural policy measure providing aid for the supply of fruit, vegetables, milk and milk products in educational establishments. It was launched in the 2017/2018 school year. The basis for its planned and effective implementation is this strategy, which has been adopted for a six-year period from the 2017/2018 school year to the 2022/2023 school year.
The promoters of the measure are the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Slovenia in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia. The implementer of the measure is the Agricultural Markets and Rural Development Agency of the Republic of Slovenia. The European Union provides funding to Member States for the free distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables to pupils in primary schools. The aim of the measure is to encourage a trend towards the consumption of fruit and vegetables, which have a high nutritional and protective value for health. These fruits have the advantage of being locally produced and are not exposed to long transport routes and storage, which reduces the biological and nutritional value and quality of the food.
Pupils consume fruit or vegetables which are offered separately from school snacks and lunches. In parallel, accompanying educational and promotional activities are carried out at the school (science days, projects, class lessons, in-class content, parent-teacher meetings, etc.). Pupils also fill in a survey twice a year for the National Public Health Institute. They monitor the effectiveness of the implementation of the School Fruit Scheme and report to the European Commission.
