On Friday, 14 November 2025, our MYP students visited Center Noordung for a Science Day experience focused on space exploration, astronomy, and hands-on STEM activities. Three teachers, including myself, accompanied the group.
We began with a guided observation tour of the center, where students learned about planets, galaxies, satellites, astronomers, astronauts, and the history and mission of the Center Noordung facility itself. The tour was informative and engaging, and students showed great curiosity throughout.
One of the highlights of the day was the VR space station experience. Using virtual reality glasses, students (and teachers) were transported into a realistic simulation of life aboard a space station. The experience was both exciting and slightly intimidating due to its high level of realism, but students thoroughly enjoyed it.
Afterward, students participated in a mini hands-on project, where they worked in pairs to design and build a parachute using provided materials. Once completed, each team tested their parachute by dropping an object from a balcony. The parachute that reached the ground last was declared the winner. Students were highly enthusiastic, creative, and motivated, and many of the designs were impressively effective.
To end the day, the group split into two teams and entered space-themed escape rooms. Each team had to solve a series of math, logic, and science puzzles in order to “escape the spacecraft.” This activity was the biggest hit of the day. Students worked collaboratively, communicated effectively, and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
Overall, Science Day at Center Noordung was a successful and enjoyable learning experience. It combined scientific knowledge, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork in an engaging and memorable way. Students returned with new knowledge, strengthened curiosity, and a shared sense of accomplishment.
